EA Sports FC 26 is now on EA Play, which means Xbox PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can play it without buying the full game first. That is a pretty good place for this year's football game to land. FC 26 has plenty of new systems to talk about, but its player reception is still mixed enough that a free trial is more appealing than a blind purchase.
The Game Pass version includes the full game and its current modes. EA and Xbox are also advertising a Supercharge Pack for EA Play members, available from June 18 through July 17, along with Football Ultimate Team Draft Tokens and seasonal Clubs rewards.
What changes in FC 26
EA says the new season brings more responsive dribbling, smarter defensive positioning, sharper movement, and more natural goalkeeper reactions. The game also splits its feel into two presets. Competitive is aimed at Ultimate Team and Clubs, with faster passing and more direct control. Authentic is built for Career mode and a more simulation-minded pace.
Career players get Manager Live Challenges, which add short scenarios and alternate storylines to a season. Clubs and Player Career get Archetypes inspired by famous players, giving created players a more defined route through progression. Football Ultimate Team adds Tournaments and Live Events, while Rivals and Champs receive their own changes.
There is also a new international tournament mode. Xbox Wire says it uses 48 national teams and more than 20,000 players, with international Manager Live Challenges and new Player Career icons and heroes tied to the mode.
Why the reception matters
Steam currently lists FC 26's English reviews as Mixed, with 51% of 28,305 reviews positive. Recent reviews are also Mixed at 56% positive from 10,364 reviews. Those numbers are not a substitute for playing the game, and they do not explain every complaint, but they do tell you this is not a clean consensus win.
The complaints and praise tend to split along familiar lines. Players who mainly want a yearly football game with friends, licensed teams, Career additions, or Ultimate Team content may find enough here to justify a download. Players who are tired of technical problems, online input issues, or the annual reset have less reason to rush in just because the subscription removes the price tag.
Who should download it first?
If you already have Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, downloading FC 26 is the sensible move. Try a few matches in both gameplay presets, check the mode you actually care about, and see whether the changes feel meaningful on your own controller. The subscription lowers the risk, but it does not make the rough edges disappear.
If you skipped launch and were waiting for a reason to return, this is a better test than another trailer or feature list. FC 26 has more to offer than a roster refresh, but the mixed Steam response is a reminder to treat EA's promises as a starting point, not a verdict. Give it a session before deciding whether this is your next football game or just another installed icon taking up space.
